Film Theory: Jack in Titanic is from the future

 

So this is an interesting one. Could Jack from Titanic actually be from the future? According to one theory, yes he very well may have. The theory is based on a small number of clues. The first clue is based on Jack’s sense of fashion. That being his haircut and backpack not being common until much later. Also he mentions several man made structures that weren’t even created yet as of 1912. Those being a roller coaster on Santa Monica Pier and Lake Wissota. This raises a question, though. Why? Why would Jack travel through time to that specific moment knowing full well what was going to happen. This is where the theory really makes you think. The theory states that Jack went back to stop Rose from killing herself. Had she of done it the Titanic would have been delayed and may very well not have struck the iceberg. If it didn’t crash then the course of history would have been altered. So Jack traveled back in time to make sure that the Titanic stayed true to its course and succumbed to the fate it was meant to. Why couldn’t he have tried to prevent it? The theory doesn’t say, however, it does make you wonder.

Film Theory: The plot of The Corpse Bride is actually Victor's wedding eve nightmare

 

This one is a rather interesting one. It says that the entire plot and story of the film was actually a nightmare of Victors. He had an image in his head of the girl he wanted to marry, her coming to life in his nightmare as Emily. Victor was restricted and not seeing himself as beautiful while Emily was everything that he was not. In the end he let her go and freed himself in the process.

Film Theory: Tremors and Footloose take place in the same town

 

So this is a weird one. This theory states that the town from Footloose is the same town from Tremors. The theory states the banning of dancing from Footloose was not an attempt to control the youth of the town but rather as a way to prevent the Tremors from waking up from underneath the town. It was feared that the rhythmic vibrations from dancing would wake them up. To add to that, Kevin Bacon's character in Footloose stayed in the town only to grow up and contain the danger he helped release. This is one of those theories that makes you think, “huh, there might be something to this.” Whatever it is, it really makes you think.

Film Theory: Terminator 3 The real reason why he didn't wear the Star Shaped Glasses

 

This one is a simple one yet it is kinda hard to believe how long it took for us to realize this. Every opening scene in the Terminator films is iconic. They all start the same way. The T-800 goes looking for a disguise after coming to that time period completely naked. He finds one, usually a leather jacket and shades. The third Terminator, however, takes a slightly different approach. In the movie the Terminator takes the outfit of a stipper which comes with red tinted star shaped glasses. He then crushes the glasses underneath his foot. Now most people, myself included, thought he did that simply because of how stupid they looked but a fan theory proposes a different reason and in short, it is brillant! This theory has to do with how the Terminator was built and how he physically saw the world. The theory says the Terminator’s vision is tinted red, too and that wearing those glasses could make it impossible for him to see. Does this make any sense? Well, kind of when you really stop to think about it. It is just funny how long it took for people to figure this out.

Film Theory: Donkey From Shrek is Actually from Pinocchio!

 

So, does Donkey from Shrek actually come from the story Pinocchio? There are little hints spread throughout the film. In the Shrek films, Donkey was never really given a back story. His portrayal in the book “Shrek!” by William Steig he was just a minor character however in the films his role in the story was greatly expounded upon. His role being primarily to provide comic relief and offer words of wisdom when needed.

The origins of many of the characters in Shrek are, for the most part, well known. The Gingerbread Man or the three blind mice but as for Donkey we know little to nothing. This is where this theory comes in.

In the 1940 movie “Pinocchio” Pinocchio visited Pleasure Island, a place where young people can associate and live carefree without all that adult supervision. However, not all is as it seems. It turns out that the children are being turned into donkeys and then sold into slavery. One feature that they kept, though, was their ability to talk. The fan theory states that Donkey from Shrek is actually one of these boys.

The later Shrek films expounded on this. Donkey makes references to being bullied and suffering wedgies when he was young, the latter only making sense within the context of Donkey actually being human at some part in his life.

Most of this theory holds water however, there is a small hole. The filmmakers behind the Shrek films have said that Donkey was originally gonna be a regular donkey who was cursed. However the movies never mention this so it isn’t canon. 

Theories like this are fun to look into and can really make you think. What else is hiding in our favorite films? Only by digging deep can we discover these secrets. 

Film Theory: Willy Wonka Is A Serial Killer

 

Willy Wonka is an iconic character who has grown to having his own cult-like following. Whether it was Gene Wilder or Johnny Depp we all have a favorite. However their role as Willy Wonka may be darker than what it appears on the surface. There is a theory that states that Willy Wonka is in fact a Serial Killer who targets children.

The theory is based on the idea that Willy Wonka intentionally chooses his victims for the tour. That he intentionally tempted them with their weaknesses all which would lead to their deaths. Augustus Gloop is sucked into a chocolate river, Violet Beauregarde is turned into a human blueberry. And Veruca Salt is thrown down a garbage chute. 

The theory states that he purposefully picked these children. These children were mean and rude, who were obsessed with their own selves and just overall bad people. Wonka may have felt he was doing the world a favor by getting rid of these people. Augustus was a gluttonous young boy whose only thoughts were that of what his next meal will be. Veruca is a spoiled brat whose money and bad manners can be seen from a mile away. Wonka most likely saw these people as the adults they were going to turn into. Just plain, bad people and by killing them off he was doing the world a favor. 

Another clue to this dark side of Wonka is his attitude to the deaths of the children. He is mostly apathetic and has this persona of not really caring. He had no concern for their wellbeing.  This is corroborated by the actions of the Oompa Loompas who sing songs about the immortality of each child and are unfazed by the plight of the children. Their job was to clean up after the murders of those children and with their attitudes it appears as though they were used to it.

The question rises, though. If all these children were bad, horrible people why was Charlie invited? Charlie was a good natured, polite, humble boy who didn’t have a bad bone in his body so why was he invited? The theory states that Wonka may have wanted to see if poor children could be just as mean and greedy as wealthy ones. However this brings up the point: Charlie survived the factory and has inherited the business so does this mean that Wonka will be training him to be a serial killer, too? We will probably never know but the idea is still rather entertaining. 

Film Theory: Titanic. Was Jack Real

 

Rose was a young girl trapped in a society that she didn’t want to be in. Caught in an engagement she didn’t want and being forced to be around superficial and shallow people her life screamed in agony in a voice that only she could hear. Having boarded the Titanic all alone in the world she finds Jack, a young man who gave her the inspiration to be herself and embrace life. As they looked out onto the sea, their dreams rolling with the gentle waves that covered the infinite expanse. An echo came back to them. Just maybe the world wasn’t quite as bad as it seemed and there was in fact some reason to be happy in this life.

This movie tells the romance between Rose and Jack. Two people from very different backgrounds. Rose coming from money and Jack having very little of it. Their relationship together grew into something beautiful. The passion they shared. Jack showing Rose what love can be. A foreign concept that almost seemed out of her comprehension. But we all know how the story ends, as heartbreaking as it may be. But there is a question. Was Jack even real at all or was he a figment of Rose’s imagination. A way to cope with life’s trouble in an attempt to once actually sport a smile and live with a measure of happiness.

Back in 2017 a theory proposed just that. That Jack in fact was just a figment of Rose’s imagination. But there is more to that than just that. The idea that Jack was a “Guardian Angel” for Rose, who felt lost and unfulfilled. Jack first appeared to Rose at a time of great turmoil. She was on the edge looking down in the the depths below. Just inches away from jumping when Jack talked her out of it. That Jack’s “sole purpose is to help Rose find the confidence to live fully on her own terms."

It is an interesting thought. One that could change how people see the movie. Turning this film from a love story to a personal journey for Rose’s character to survive the sinking of the Titanic and find it in herself to live for her own sake. To live the life she wanted to. To be her own self.

Jack saved Rose in more ways than just the sinking of the ship. He helped her achieve what she wanted in life. And whether or not Jack was real he helped her achieve it. 

When Brock told Rose that there was no trace of Jack in the records the elderly Rose said: "No, there wouldn't be, would there? He exists now only in my memory."

The love between the two was strong. It was a love that only a few get to experience and whether or not Jack was real Rose wouldn’t have become the person she was to be. In some way Jack was always with her. Just a memory of a love. A hand to hold onto as she became the woman she wanted.

Film Theory: Ted "Theodore" Logan and John Wick

 

Ted “Theodore” Logan had a problem. He never took up much interest in school and was failing History. His father, a rather militant man, was pissed. Wanting to see his son succeed and watching him fail in his studies and focus too much time on his band with Bill called “The Wyld Stallyns” Ted’s father felt as though he was wasting his life. The only life he was going to get. Something had to be done. And it had to be done now. In response to Ted’s lack of enthusiasm and half assed attempts with his studies, Ted’s father put forth a condition. If Ted were to fail history he would be pulled out of public school and be sent to a Military School off somewhere in Alaska. In short, if Ted didn’t pick up his game then his life would take a turn that he didn’t want to make.

Now, as fans of the movie will remember, Ted did in fact pass history and was never sent to Alaska. That was due to the interference of Rufus. A man from the future traveling through time in a Phone Booth (straight from the nineties,) Rufus was sent to help Ted as the music Ted and Bill were to make was going to change the world. But this brings up an interesting point. If Rufus could travel back in time and change history then that would make time fluid and that alternate realities could in fact exist where Ted did in fact fail and was sent to Military School. So, let’s explore one of those possibilities as the connection between these two characters, who, on the surface couldn’t seem farther apart actually share more in common than we may realize.

We all know John Wick. The assassin with Military training who now works in the private sector going for revenge after his car was stolen and his dog was killed. Now other than the obvious of both Ted and John Wick being played by the same actor (Keanu Reeves) there are other little hints to this connection. If Ted had been sent to Military School he would have started it at an early age. And with the character of John Wick we know that he started his training at a very young age. Also there are other subtle hints. John Wick’s car is a 1969 Ford Mustang Mach 1. And what is a Mustang? It is nothing more than a wild stallion (think their band name.) Not only, however, Ted was born in 1969. The same year as the model of John Wicks car.

I have to admit here that there isn’t really much more evidence than this. Just a few little conformities, sharing similarities and a few weak connections. However, it is rather interesting and really makes you think. If there is a possibility of Ted and John being the same person then what else may be? What other connections could be made. Not just with Ted and John but in other franchises as well? It is fun to hunt for these as they only bring us deeper into the films and characters that we love.

Film Theory: Pennywise and Poppins

 

To fans of both IT and Mary Poppins it may seem hard to believe that the two could be connected. And in actuality they aren’t. However, it is rather fun to relate one to the other and even though there is no chance of this being factual the mere thought of the two sharing the same universe can be rather captivating.

Both Pennywise and Mary Poppins have a similar trait: They both reappear after 20 odd years: Poppins after 25 years and Pennywise after 27. Mary Poppins returns back to the Banks family while, in Pennywise’s case, he returns to the Losers. At the same time, Mary Poppins' powers are largely forgotten by the Bank's children while the Losers have mostly put Pennywise out of their minds altogether. At the same time, the parents of the Banks family and those of the Losers are largely oblivious to what is going on. It also makes sense that both Poppins and Pennywise would need to suck energy out of their children to regenerate their powers and come back to their full strength.

Both characters also share a love for song and dance. Pennywise calling himself the dancing clown while Poppins enchants the Banks children with dream-like musicals. They share another similarity as well. Pennywise has what he calls “The Deadlights” which can leave his subjects frozen in place if they look into it. While Mary Poppins doesn’t have anything quite like this she does have something else up her sleeve. In “Trip a Little Light Fantastic” an entire fleet of Lamplighters are proven to exist when Michael (played by Ben Whishaw) looks out his window and sees only Poppins and the other children.

Another similarity between the two has to do with the Balloons. The red balloon in IT always preceded Pennywise’s return while in “Mary Poppins Returns” they all grab balloons and float magically into the air.

There are major differences between the two, however. While Pennywise uses fear to feed his power, Poppins uses joy and imagination. And this is the reason Poppins is still alive and thriving while Pennywise is gone. Just like in “Monsters Inc” Mary Poppins learns that the true energy was laughter and joy and she harvested it. All the while Pennywise, pursuing fear which ultimately led to his downfall.

Like I said at the beginning of this post, there is little to no chance of this connection actually being true. Disney would never associate their beloved character with the likes of Pennywise. Still, though, it is rather fun to think about it and connect the two. It really makes you think, doesn’t it?
