Zombieland (2009) Review

There is a certain charm to Zombieland. A film that wraps its horror in a cloak of comedy. While frightening at times, it was the moments between the violence, between the ravenous attacks of the undead that really make this movie what it is. The glue that held it together was the chemistry of the survivors, not so much the zombies themselves. Even if the story was unoriginal at times and played off of cliche and old tired tropes it still told a story, a story about friendship and what it means to have others in your life.

Columbus was your typical loner. Just trying to make it another day without being zombie food. As he travels from place to place he meets up with Tallahassee, another loner just out there trying to survive. Their relationship was cliche and predictable. Tallahassee being distant, if not a little arrogant, while Columbus sat in the passenger seat trying to be friendly even though he didn’t really know what to say.

As they traveled they met up with Wichita and Little Rock who were trying to head out west. Their relationship with Columbus and Tallahassee was strained at first. None of them trusting the other. Things changed, though, and as the film progressed they became close, more like family.

The story of this film has been played out before. It offers little of anything original and if you’ve seen any other zombie movie before then don’t expect anything new. What it does, though, is show the power that people can have in our lives. How we need each other and how we can’t always survive on our own.
