Edward Scissorhands (1990) Review

The story of Edward Scissorhands has always been a sad one. An outsider to society Edward never really knew his purpose in life. Living all alone in the castle-like structure at the top of the hill overlooking a small, quaint town below. A town brightly lit and full of gossiping women.

Edward ends up befriending the local Avon Lady, a woman kind in heart with a beautiful spirit. She sees past the oddity of Edward. Sees that behind the scars and the blades Edward is like everyone else, just needing someone to love him.

The people in the town, however, see Edward as something else. They see him as something that they can use. He is more of a tool than a friend. As his skills with blades became common knowledge they took advantage of it. In their mind he could give them a quick profit.

Kim, a young teenager who at first seems apprehensive towards Edward eventually begins to see what is in his heart and that he is someone beautiful behind the blades. Their friendship grows slowly however Kim’s boyfriend proves to be annoyed by Edward and takes advantage of him.

In the end, most of the town turns on Edward and he is forced to go back to his old life. A life alone with only his skill with his scissors to keep him company.

This is a story of how we all need love in our lives. It is a story of friendship and how we should look past people’s scars and embrace them for who they are. Beauty goes deeper than skin level and a beautiful soul can take you more places than your physical appearance.

8.5 out of 10
